_MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY ARCHITECTURE BUILDING CONSTRUCTION IS NEARING COMPLETION

Some Collie town planners recently had an opportunity to view the new ABP (architecture, building and planning) building at the University of Melbourne. Our guide, the Dean of the Architecture, Planning and Building Faculty Tom Kvan, explained the principle design aspects and nuances as we wondered through the key spaces of the building including the Brian Lewis Atrium, the Hansen Yuncken Suspended Studios and the Dulux Gallery.

When complete it is anticipated that the building will be an open and welcoming space for all students at the University.  It will comprise numerous formal and informal studio spaces and workshops [indoor and outdoor] and it will be a pedagogical building [many building construction techniques and materials will be observable / touchable / usable].

The building is the first to be awarded a 6 Star Green Star Education Design rating with 10 innovation points under Green Star.

We cannot wait to see whether the building will achieve the great expectations of its designers but our first impressions were very good.
