_MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT IN FOOTSCRAY

Collie assisted Baumgart Clark Architects with its planning permit for a multi-storey mixed use development in Leeds Street, Footscray.  The site is located in the heart of the commercial area of Footscray and adjoins an area of public open space, known as Maddern Square, to the west.

The site is located in the Footscray Central Activities District (CAD) which is expected to undergo considerable change in the coming years.  Substantial medium and high density housing, including shop-top housing is encouraged in this precinct and is reflected by the approved proposal.

The development includes three ground floor retail tenancies, two of which front onto Leeds Street and a third addressing Maddern Square and Chambers Street.  A range of studio, one and two-bedroom apartments are located across the three levels above.

The works involve the demolition of a portion of the existing building however, the main brick facade on Leeds Street is to be retained and incorporated into the overall design of the building.  The building addition adopts a modern design, while also being respectful of the older character of the existing building.  No car parking is being provided as part of the development given the availability nearby of other modes of transport.

We expect to see more shop-top development in the Footscray CAD as urban renewal of the precinct continues and we look forward to commencement of construction on this exciting project.
