Germany as with other parts of Europe, is extremely efficient with its land use with with the prevalence of vineyards, solar and wind farms being examples.

What is surprising and also spectacular is that the location of vineyards do not preclude land with steep terrain and vineyards are often located right on the edge of towns.

Weingut Regnery winery, located in the Mosel wine region is no exception and the cellar door (designed in the shape of an oak barrel) resides amongst rural dwellings and sloping vineyards.

The cellar door at Weingut Regnery is open only by appointment and we were fortunate to be able to have a tasting with the winemaker.  The dry and sweet Rieslings in particular were outstanding and much more affordable than Australian wines.

Despite the steepness of the terrain, it was interesting to hear that all the grapes were handpicked.

The winemaker explained that a lot of good wineries in Germany mainly export to Europe (too small to export to Australia, which suggest we are missing out!).
