An interesting snippet in a recent VCAT decision, which noted in the particular case that
“An important element in the area is the railway from Princes Bridge to Clifton Hill. It opened . . . on a continuous elevated embankment which eliminated the need for level crossings. The access provided by the railway boosted the residential development of the surrounding area . . . “.
Sounds very familiar in the context of level crossing removals in the present time. It actually refers to construction in 1901.
Perhaps a VCAT case in 200 years will be quoting the construction of a Melbourne Airport rail link in 2101!
