_Yarraville Level Crossing Removal
The Yarraville level crossing removal is going through a negative community campaign to have the design changed to provide better universal post-removal accessibility.
In this case, the level crossing removal will remove altogether the existing vehicle access on Anderson Street at the crossing. The closure of crossing / Street appears not to be the main concern but rather that access under the rail line will include stairs and lifts rather than a ramp – although a second ramp underpass is planned about 400 metres further north.
In response to the local campaign, the Victorian Government has released recently a new report spelling out the reasons for the dual underpasses but particularly why no ramp on Anderson Street. The document in itself, provides some informative background (unlike earlier publications) on reasoning for the underpass design detail and on the face of it, puts forward a reasonable case.
It will be interesting to follow the campaign and see the final result, with the works proposed for completion in 2029.
