_Light Rail in Canberra
After many years of road construction with reservation widths to accommodate future light rail, it was interesting to travel on and see completed and progressing works on the project in the National Capital. In 2004 the Sustainable Transport Plan set the scene for future high capacity public transport.
The stage 1 link north from the City (Alinga Street in the commercial centre) to the Gungahlin Town Centre (a 12 kilometres link largely in dedicated reservations separate from road traffic) was opened on 20 April 2019. It carried about 1 million passengers in its first twelve months.
Under construction as stage 2A is the first part of a south link from Alinga Street west around City Hill on London Circuit to Commonwealth Park at the north edge of Lake Burley Griffin. Stage 2B crosses the Lake and follows Commonwealth Avenue, east around State Circle and Parliament House and then southwest and west to Woden Town Centre, a distance of about 10 kilometres.
