_Next phase of Eildon

Collie is providing town planning advice to the new owner of the previous Alliance Francais heritage site and buildings (‘Eildon’) at 51 Grey Street St Kilda.  The lead consultant is Simon Greenwood Architects. 

Originally built in the mid-19^th century as a Georgian-style dwelling, it was later enlarged significantly with the addition of the existing 32-room mansion known as Eildon.  The extension was designed by renowned architects Reed and Barnes, who was responsible for the design of other iconic buildings around Melbourne, most notably the Royal Exhibition Buildings, the State Library of Victoria and Melbourne Town Hall.  The Grey Street façade is in fact the rear of Eildon, with subdivision and selling-off of parts of the original parcel resulting in the public street frontage being Grey Street. 

Eildon is on the Victorian Heritage Register, recognised for its architectural and historical significance to the State of Victoria, as a sophisticated example of a Renaissance Revival style mansion and as an ‘expression of success’ from the early era of the Melbourne development and expansion.  The new owner has purchased the site due to real interest in its heritage and is proposing a use compatible with that significance. 

The proposed intended use of Eildon will bring new life to the building and enhance its heritage significance within Melbourne.
